Matteo Bertelé is lecturer in History of Modern Art in East Europe and a post-doc research fellow at the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. He studied Russian, German and History of Art at Ca’ Foscari University, at Humboldt Universität in Berlin and at the Russian State University for Humanities (RGGU) in Moscow. In 2011 he obtained a PhD at Ca’ Foscari University, with a thesis on the history of Russian participation at the Venice Biennale (1895-1914). The results of his research have been published in the book Russian Artists at the Venice Biennale 1895-2013, awarded in 2013 as “Book of the Year” by the Art Newspaper Russia and nominated in the category “Theory, Art Critics and History” at the Innovation Prize organized by the National Centre for Contemporary Arts of the Russian Federation. In 2011 he was appointed scientific secretary of the Centre of Studies of Russian Arts (CSAR) at Ca’ Foscari University, where he curated and coordinated more than twenty exhibitions of modern and contemporary Russian art.
He took part in international conferences in Italy, Russia, United States, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Estonia. He has worked and researched in archives and collections of Russian and Soviet art, both private and public (Museum of Prints and Drawings, Dresden.)
His research projects and interests deal with Russian émigré artists in Italy, cultural relationships between GDR, USSR and Italy, Soviet iconography in the post-socialist era, and in general with exhibition studies concerning the history of Russian, Soviet and Post-soviet art shows and collections, as well as their reception abroad, during and after the Cold War.
